Defect Anomalies at a Distance
Source: arxiv.org/abs/2611.08476
Surface defects carry Weyl and gravitational anomalies that generalize the central charges of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) and characterize the anomalous response of gapless surface modes to background geometry. These anomalies usually appear as contact terms on the defect. We explain how they are encoded at a distance, in scheme-independent integrated bulk stress-tensor correlators. We derive sum rules for them in terms of defect operator data, establish a lower bound on the boundary Weyl anomaly in three-dimensional CFTs, and illustrate our results with explicit examples.
